Man arrested and charged over death of Laois dad in workplace

A man has been arrested and charged over the workplace death of a Laois married father of two.

John Maher, originally from Rathevan, Portlaoise but living in Rathangan, Kildare was tragically killed last Wednesday July 2 while at work in Rathdrum Wicklow.

Tarieli Schatz, aged 37, with an address of Abbey Street, Wicklow Town, was arrested in Wicklow and charged, and remains in custody.

He is charged that on July 2 on the public road of Greenane Road in Ballygannon, Rathdrum, he drove a Thwaites Front Dumper "without due care and attention thereby causing the death of another person, namely John Maher". 

Schatz appeared in Bray District Court on Friday July 4 and is remanded to appear in court again on Tuesday, July 8 in Bray.

John Maher, who was married with two young sons, is to be laid to rest in Rathangan this Monday, July 7 following his funeral mass at The Church of Assumption and St. Patrick, Rathangan.

He is mourned by his wife Tracey, sons Seán and Fionn, parents Pat and Mary, brother Liam, sisters Patricia and Eileen, parents in law Theo and Josie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, extended family, neighbours, friends and work colleagues.
