The Laois Shopping Centre Senior Football Championship continues on Sunday with another vital Round 3 double-header. The prize on offer is a place in the quarter-finals, where Portlaoise, Ballyroan-Abbey, Arles-Killeen and Graiguecullen are already waiting.
Two more sides sealed their spots on Saturday evening as the last two champions, Portarlington and St Joseph’s, advanced from their Third Round contests, meaning just two last-eight places remain up for grabs.
The Heath v Killeshin at 2.15pm
Sunday’s action begins with The Heath taking on Killeshin. The Heath’s championship journey began with a defeat to reigning champions Portarlington, but they bounced back in style against Clonaslee St Manman’s. Trailing by five points with 15 minutes to go, they rallied superbly and finished strongly to secure a two-point win.
Killeshin, meanwhile, may still be scratching their heads over how they didn’t secure a quarter-final spot two weeks earlier. They dominated large spells against Arles-Killeen, racing into a six-point lead as their opponents failed to register until the 27th minute. Even when goalkeeper Killian Roche netted a penalty in the 43rd minute, they remained in control. But a dramatic late surge saw Oisín Byrne grab a decisive goal in the 51st minute, with Ennae Byrne and Adam Donoghue adding injury-time points to snatch victory for Arles-Killeen.
Prediction: Killeshin to reach the quarter-finals for the third consecutive year, with a five-point win.
O’Dempsey’s v Courtwood at 4pm
The final Third Round tie of the weekend sees local rivals O’Dempsey’s face Courtwood with a place in the last eight on the line.
O’Dempsey’s endured a tough opening night as Portlaoise dismantled them in Ratheniska. They regrouped, however, and returned to the same venue to defeat Crettyard in Round 2, keeping their championship ambitions alive.
Courtwood started brightly, hammering Crettyard 2-23 to 0-10, but they fell just short in Round 2. In a high-scoring contest, Ballyroan-Abbey edged them out 2-16 to 2-14, leaving Courtwood needing a response on Sunday.
Prediction: O’Dempsey’s to edge a close contest by two points and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
