Portlaoise Prison is home to Ireland's most dangerous criminals
Two men appeared in court accused of attempting to aid an escape from Portlaoise Prison.
Desmond Collins (20) of 31 Hyde Avenue, Balinacurra Weston, Limerick and Michael Shannon (29) of 80 Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court in relation to an incident at Borris Road, Portlaoise, on December 17, 2024.
They are each charged with taking part in arrangements for enabling another person to escape from lawful custody by attempting to convey 11 mobile phones and a makeshift knife, chisel and screwdriver into Portlaoise Prison.
The pair are further accused of trying to convey drugs into Portlaoise Prison on the same date on the Borris Road in Portlaoise.
Garda Billy O’Connor gave evidence of charging Mr Collins who he said made no reply. He said the second defendant made no reply when charged in relation to the matter.
Both men were remanded on continuing bail to appear again before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court on October 13 for service of the book of evidence.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick requested legal aid which was granted by Judge Susan Fay.
