Plans lodged for new telecoms tower outside Portlaoise to address gap in coverage

The application structure will deliver Vodafone coverage to Junction 16 and to the M7

A planning application has been lodged with Laois County Council for the erection of a new telecommunications tower outside Portlaoise to boost phone coverage.

APW UK WIP Limited t/a Icon Tower has submitted the application to erect a 24 metre high lattice tower with antennas, dishes and associated telecommunications equipment, including equipment cabinets at ground level all enclosed by security fencing together with access track at Ballydavis.

In their application to the local authority the company says the new structure will address Vodafone's need to significantly improve services in the target catchment area of The Heath, its school and residences, businesses and to the Heath Driving Range.

The application structure will deliver Vodafone coverage to Junction 16 and to the M7 particularly the first two kilometers of motorway north of Junction 16, to Keyes Business Park and to Old Kilminchy.

“It is evident that Ballydavis and large areas of the target catchment have weak and almost non existent 4G and 5G coverage. The coverage in this area is wholly inadequate, with many residents and businesses experiencing difficulties with their communications. The current demand for coverage is not being met and significant improvements are necessary to address the issue,” the application states.

“The structure will significantly improve 4G and 5G Vodafone coverage locally; it will make a significant positive contribution to the benefit of residents, businesses, and social enterprises in the surrounding area as well as the local and national road network.”

The application site is within an existing farm holding.
