Gardai across Laois and Offaly are targeting illegal parking on footpaths and in disabled bays as part of Operation Enable.
The day of action coincides with the Disability Federation of Ireland’s ‘Make Way Day’, which highlights the challenges faced by persons with disabilities on a daily basis.
Gardai said obstacles can include bins left on paths, shop signs and placards, bicycles chained to lampposts and illegally parked vehicles.
Laois Gardaí posted images from Rathdowney where they were out ensuring compliance with parking in spaces reserved for those with disabilities. “We are glad to report that the spaces at the Community Garden and outside the Library were kept free for those that need them,” they stated.
Gardaí will be engaging with communities throughout the day to raise awareness and ensure compliance in accessible parking bays and areas where wheelchair access is required.
Gardai reminded people that parking in a disabled parking bay without a valid permit will lead to a €150 fine and parking on a footpath carries an €80 fine.
