Gardai across Laois and Offaly targeted illegal parking on footpaths and in disabled bays as part of Operation Enable.
The day of action coincided with the Disability Federation of Ireland’s ‘Make Way Day’, which aimed to highlight the challenges faced by persons with disabilities on a daily basis.
Gardai said obstacles can include bins left on paths, shop signs and placards, bicycles chained to lampposts and illegally parked vehicles.
Laois Offaly Gardaí said they were delighted with the level of compliance of motorists on visiting Rathdowney where parking spaces had been kept clear for persons who needed them on Friday.
“Unfortunately we have detected some inconsiderate parking in Laois and Offaly. In Abbeyleix, we detected two vehicles blocking the disabled parking spaces. In Tullamore we detected two vehicles parked on footpaths," gardai said.
They said fines had been issued to all the drivers concerned.
Gardai reminded people that parking in a disabled parking bay without a valid permit will lead to a €150 fine and parking on a footpath carries an €80 fine.
