A Laois County Councillor has called for the repair of a local bridge after stoneworks carried out left the bridge unsafe.

Rathdowney Fine Gael Cllr John King requested that Laois County Council confirm 'when the contractor will come back and make safe stonework that was not properly secured' on the bridge at Clonmeen South.

"These works are now a matter of urgency," Cllr King highlighted.

This motion was seconded by fellow Fine Gael Cllr Conor Bergin.

The Council's Area Office replied that the contractor has been contacted about the issue, and that they will meet with the contractor on site to address the issue.

Cllr King welcomed this news.

"I have to say, they did a great job on the bridge and the stone is nice. But whatever sort of mixture that they put into it, it wasn't strong enough," he said.

"There were farmers going down across the river and the stones became loose. What does happen at times is when people know that stones are loose, they have a habit of disappearing," he said.

"On the bridge outside Rathdowney, the lovely capstones went missing. They were lovely cut stones, so if we could go back and make them more secure, that would be okay. They're all falling out," Cllr King finished.

This motion was tabled at the September sitting of Laois County Council's Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick Municipal District.
