Laois Offaly ETB and the ESB have announced a new apprenticeship aimed at maintaining Ireland’s electrical infrastructure.

The new Overhead Lines Technician Apprenticeship, recently approved for development by the National Apprenticeship Council, was showcased at WorldSkills Ireland 2025 in Dublin’s RDS.

The programme will support the development of a highly skilled workforce in the electrical overhead line sector and provide a structured pathway into the industry.

The apprenticeship is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and expertise required to construct and maintain ESB Networks critical overhead electrical infrastructure.

The two-year programme will incorporate a mix of classroom-based education and practical skills training delivered by LOETB and on-job training and work experience through ESB Networks OHL programme delivery partners.

Recruitment for the first intake of apprentices will begin in Q1 2026, with the inaugural programme commencing later that year.

Chairperson of the consortium Donagh, Shanahan, said: “As the chairperson of the group of OHL contractors we are delighted to be working with LOETB in the development of an Overhead Lines Technician Apprenticeship which will support the large portfolio of work programmes required to meet ESB Networks future requirements. This is an exciting time for our industry, and apprenticeships are crucial for developing local talent to help meet future workforce demands.”

Chief Executive Laois & Offaly Education & Training Board, Joe Cunningham, said: “LOETB is proud to have the opportunity, supported by ESB Networks, to develop Ireland’s first apprenticeship for Overhead Line Technicians, a vital step in preparing a skilled workforce for the future of our energy infrastructure. This project reflects our commitment to innovation in education and training, ensuring learners gain industry-relevant skills that support both local employment and national sustainability goals.”
