Laois County Councillors have welcomed the introduction of age friendly parking bays in a busy town square.
Rathdowney Fine Gael Cllr John King tabled a motion for these accessibility upgrades, introduced through the town's regeneration plan.
“I'm happy to see that these works have been done in the town this week, I am a happy man today,” Cllr King said.

“It is a busy part of the square due to the church and the coffee box, so I am very glad to see it done, and I thank you for that,” the Rathdowney Cllr finished.
September saw Rathdowney's square closed off to traffic for road resurfacing works, following the allocation of a €213,000 fund for regeneration.
This project has been carried out by Laois County Council’s area office in collaboration with the Regeneration Team.
A €50,000 grant was also allocated for the redesign of Rathdowney's town square, with a new design currently in the works.
The roadworks follow the development of a Town First Plan for Rathdowney, which examined the town's challenges and potential, making suggestions for improvements and paving the way for grant applications.
Independent Mountrath Cllr James Kelly supported Cllr King's motion.
“Well done to Rathdowney's Town Team, I know that Cllr King was involved in that," Cllr Kelly said.
“There was great work done in that area, and road safety was a big factor of the works done, it was the main part of it. It looks very well, and they got in a great contractor," he said.
“As Cllr King said to me one day, 'short-term pain for long-term gain', and that's what we had,” Cllr Kelly highlighted.
“Now was the right time to get these works done, it will hopefully be a much busier square, now that people have the facilities to park there,” Cllr Kelly finished.
This motion was tabled at the October sitting of Laois County Council's Borris in Ossory / Mountmellick Muncipal District.
