A date for the first Laois community policing meeting in nearly two years has been revealed.
A major new committee is being formed in Laois representing all sectors in the county, to raise security issues every three months directly in a meeting with An Garda Síochana's Laois division.
Local Community Safety Partnerships (LCSP) are a Government formed initiative replacing Joint Policing Committees who haven't met in Laois since spring 2024.
The LCSP for Laois will have 26 members, but there is a concern about whether it will "have teeth" or merely be "a talking shop".
Its first meeting is "hopefully in December" according to Laois County Council senior manager Pat Delaney.
Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley queried when the "new JPC" will first meet, at the October 28 council meeting.
Mr Delaney, Acting Director of Services for community and integration, climate and environment, answered her.
"When we send up the nominations we have to wait for the Minister's approval so I'd expect, hopefully, December. If we can get one earlier we will," he said.
Hearing the date, Cllr Ollie Clooney asked "is it only a talking shop, or will it have any teeth?".
Mr Delaney replied that "With 26 members it obviously has the capacity to go off the agenda but we'll be very focussed on keeping it to the items on the agenda. It won't be a talking shop".

The Laois LCSP will include local councillors, Gardaí, community representatives, business and education representatives, and a range of statutory agencies, including Laois County Council, the HSE, Tusla in Laois.
The Laois Public Participation Network (PPN) is seeking nominations for Laois PPN Reps from the hundreds of groups affiliated to its network. They will include local residents associations, and representatives of minority groups. There are however no seats for any of the three Laois TDs.
The meetings will take place every three months. They are expected to be held in private.
