Tree surgery underway.
Laois planners need to set down guidelines in relation to trees being planted in estates, a Council meeting was told.
Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy tabled a motion in relation to trees at an estate in Stradbally.
He called on Laois County Council to assess the trees at Kylebeg on the Athy Road, with a view to making them safe.
In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan, said the Council will carry out an assessment to identify and schedule in any trees for trimming that are potentially affecting the public road network in this estate.
Independent Cllr Aisling Moran said planners need to make developers aware of the potential harm trees can do to footpaths in estates as they are causing damage.
“It is going to cost the Council a fortune,” said Cllr Moran. She said trees should be set back from paths.
Cllr McEvoy agreed with Cllr Moran and Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins said he believed in some cases the wrong types of trees were being planted in estates.
Cllr McEvoy said he would meet with Council officials at the location in Stradbally.
The issue was discussed during the October meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
