Construction has begun in Graiguecullen on a massive development providing 210 new homes, a creche and a nursing home to the town on the Laois / Carlow border.

Laois County Council granted permission to developers Salzagold Limited for the construction of 214 homes, a 119 bed nursing home and a creche on a nine hectare site in 2022.

The development is now managed by BHA Construction Ltd, who have confirmed that 210 new homes, a creche and a nursing home will be built on the site to the western edge of Graiguecullen.

The site is to the north by Fruithill Manor and the Castlecomer Road, to the east by Tommy Murphy Park and Springhill Court, there are undeveloped lands to the south and the Carlow Northern Relief Road Extension is to the west.

The company say that the development will provide the town with 'a vibrant new community' designed with 'modern living in mind'.

"This exciting project will deliver 210 residential units, offering a mix of 2, 3 and 4-bed homes alongside apartments," the company said.

"A 100-bed nursing home and creche, will provide essential community care facilities. Together, we’re building more than homes – we’re shaping places for people and communities to thrive," they said.

"It's great to see substantial progress on site in Carlow, where our team is delivering a significant new residential development utilising the Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) system.

"The drone footage captures the scale and pace of work as the structures continue to take shape. Once complete, this development will deliver much-needed housing and community facilities to the area," they said.

The plans allow for the removal of foundations, roads and associated works from a previously uncompleted development.

“Having regard to its nature, extent and location, it is considered that the proposed development would be compliant with the provisions of the Laois County Development Plan 2021-2027 and the Joint Spatial Plan for the Greater Carlow Graiguecullen Urban Area 2012-2018 (extended to 4th November 2022) and with the proper sustainable development of the area,” Laois County Council stated when planning was granted in 2022.
