A Laois town centre road is about to close for two weeks, just as the Christmas shopping rush gets underway, to build a new eco friendly cycle and footpath in Portlaoise.

The road at Tower Hill, Portlaoise is closing this Friday, November 21, and will fully reopen on Friday, December 5.

Laois County Council has announced the closures affecting a total of 11 days, during the weekdays and in the daytime from 8am to 6pm.

The carpark at Tower Hill is firstly closing for two days this week.

They will lift the road closures on the weekends for what is the busiest time of the year for Portlaoise traders.

The closure days are Friday, November 21, Monday to Friday November 24 to 28, and Monday to Friday December 1 to 5.

The road closures are to allow the construction of an exciting new eco friendly riverside walkway and cycle path through Portlaoise town centre.

The Triogue Way Footpath Improvement Scheme is aimed at getting people out of their cars and into safe active travel through the town parks, cutting fossil fuel emissions and traffic jams in the process.

Phase two includes an improved cycle/walkway, a pedestrian crossing and road resurfacing on the L21207 and in Tower Hill Car Park. The first section already connects the schools in Summerhill to JFL Avenue through the People's Park.
