Important update given on construction works at Laois primary school

Laois County Council has provided an update on the safety works being carried out at The Rock National School in Mountmellick.

In response to Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald's motion on completing the footpaths at the school during the November meeting of the Portlaoise MD, the council said that safety works are currently underway at the school as part of a Low Cost Safety Scheme.

The council told Cllr Fitzgerald: "We swapped The Rock School Safety Scheme with another potential scheme due to ongoing safety concerns at the school. Due to budgetary constraints we did not install the intended footpath along the eastern section of the roadway away from the school as intended.

"We are installing traffic calming signage and road signage, additional line-marking, a speed ramp, and additional public lighting. A slipform kerb has also been installed on the eastern side of the school to help with delineation of the road edge. All speed radar signs/flashing school signs have been assessed and fixed where required."

Cllr Fitzgerald said she welcomed the works underway, but pointed out concerns raised by local residents regarding the different materials used in the footpaths.

The councillor said that different materials are being used on different sections of the road and this is a "big issue" for the people living in the area.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley agreed with Cllr Fitzgerald, saying she too has received complaints on the matter.

Cllr Fitzgerald urged Laois County Council that future works there be uniform when it comes to materials.
