Laois TY students connect with local business through work experience

Portlaoise College’s Transition Year students have just wrapped up the first of their work experience blocks, making a real contribution to local businesses and community organisations.

Placements ranged from Dunamaise Arts Centre, Mr Price, The Midlands Park Hotel, Browns Fruit and Veg to Hughes Pharmacy and the Irish Wheelchair Association, as well as local primary schools, giving students the chance to learn practical skills while supporting the town they live in.

“The work experience programme isn’t just about learning new skills,” said Pauric Kenny, TY Coordinator. “It’s about forming meaningful connections. Our students give their energy and enthusiasm, and in return, they gain insight into how our community functions and thrives.”

For employers, the students’ help has been invaluable, whether assisting in shops, schools or community centres. Many placements highlighted the reciprocal nature of the experience, with students enjoying the satisfaction of giving back while gaining real-world experience.

The next block of work experience won’t take place until February, leaving plenty of time for students to reflect on their first placements and plan for the next stage.
