World champion golfer Shane Lowry and his Laois wife Wendy are supporting a Laois school fundraiser this Christmas.

Wendy (née Honner) is sister to principal Melissa Burnell of Clonenagh National School, Mountrath and they always show great family support of the school's annual community Tractor run and 6k family run/walk each December.

This year the couple have donated a signed t-shirt to the accompanying auction, with all events taking place on Sunday, December 28 in the beautiful village of Coolrain in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

It promises to be a day to remember, as Melissa told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"The day begins bright and early with registration at Hogans for the 6K Family Run/Walk at 11am. This scenic route winds its way through Coolrain’s stunning countryside, offering the perfect chance to dust off the Christmas cobwebs while enjoying fresh air, fun, and friendly company. Whether you run, walk, or stroll, the atmosphere is always uplifting," she said.

The excitement continues in the afternoon with registration for the famous Tractor Run at 1:30pm in Hogan’s Pub, Coolrain. From there, tractors of all shapes and sizes set off on a picturesque journey through the surrounding area, cheered on by locals and visitors alike. On their return, participants are rewarded with hearty stew and the warm hospitality the Clonenagh Tractor Run is known for.

Throughout the day,  raffle lines will be sold with fantastic prizes up for grabs—but the real showstopper arrives at 8pm, when Joe Shirley takes to the floor to lead the much-loved Monster Auction. This lively event is always a highlight, bringing the entire community together for great fun and “mighty crack.”

"This year, Clonenagh National School is especially thrilled to announce a standout auction item: a signed T-shirt from professional golfer Shane Lowry. A proud supporter of the school, Shane’s generosity comes at a wonderful moment following his recent success with Team Europe in the Ryder Cup, where he played a key part in securing their victory. The school is honoured to have this incredible item included in the auction," the principal said.

All funds raised on the day will support the ongoing running of Clonenagh NS. Proceeds will contribute to essential costs such as bus transport for swimming lessons and sports matches, as well as the continued development of the school’s newly acquired outdoor area. The event also helps provide much-needed resources in areas such as IT, sports, and classroom materials—ensuring a richer learning environment for every child.

"The staff, pupils, and parents of Clonenagh National School warmly invite you to join them in Coolrain on the 28th for what promises to be a wonderful, fun-filled community day. You’ll be very glad you made the trip," Ms Burnell said.
