A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of a man who assaulted a garda at the National Ploughing Championships in Laois.
David Feeney (42) of Ballymeeney, Dromore West, Co Sligo, assaulted a female Garda causing her harm at the National Ploughing Championships, Ratheniska, Laois on August 21, 2023.
Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client was unfortunately unable to attend at Portlaoise District Court.
“He and his partner, they were in a serious accident a couple of days before the last occasion,” said Mr Meagher. He said the woman was in critical condition for 12 days and the man is her carer. He said the man was unable to get someone to mind her while he attended court.
“This man has a list of previous convictions as long as your arm,” said Judge Andrew Cody.
Mr Meagher said the man was hoping to try and get a carer for his partner.
Judge Cody asked to see the victim impact statement in the case.
“This man is an electrical contractor. Is there any tangible expression of remorse available?” asked Judge Cody.
Mr Meagher said he had discussed the issue with the defendant and the man would be open to the suggestion.
Judge Cody described it as unacceptable that the man had assaulted a garda at the National Ploughing Championships. He issued a bench warrant for sentencing and the man attended court today when Judge Peter White was sitting on Monday, December 22.
Judge White remanded the defendant on bail to appear before Judge Cody at Portlaoise District Court on January 15, 2026.
