A planning application to transform the former Rosetta Nursing Home in Portlaoise into a base for Catholic broadcasts has been submitted to Laois County Council.

Rosetta Nursing Home, now Shalom World, ceased trading seven years ago and was recently sold to Shalom Media who have  submitted the application to change the use of the former nursing home on the Dublin Road to part office use and part domestic dwelling house.

Shalom Media is a Catholic organisation and recognised charity that has its own tv station and produces mass and religious documentaries in Portlaoise.

The organisation intends to change the use of the existing bedrooms of Rosetta House to offices, a podcast room and studios where they can broadcast from.

The applicants acknowledge that the original building of Rosetta House is a protected structure and their proposal includes no physical changes to that part of the building.

The application states: "The original layout to the Rosetta Nursing Home was two dwelling houses on the site and these were linked with an extension. The main body of the house will become the Shalom World offices and studios, and the remainder of the property will be returned to a domestic dwelling house."

Included in the planning application is permission to change the name on the front entrance pier from Rosetta to Shalom World and to erect new signage to reflect the changes.

Shalom World plan on having two full-time staff on the site and opening hours will vary between weekdays and weekends.

Laois County Council are due to make their decision on the application by Wednesday, 25 February 2025.
