Portlaoise College has launched a new fundraising initiative, Step Up for the School Bus, with the aim of raising €100,000 to purchase a much-needed new school bus.
The fundraiser has already secured backing from well known organisations such as Laois Offaly Education and Training Board staff, Portlaoise Panthers, Portlaoise Family Resource Centre, Timahoe Male Choir and Clonad GAA and there it is hoped more backers will soon come on board.
The current school bus needs to be replaced with a larger, more modern bus to ensure students can continue to take part in the school’s wide range of extra-curricular activities while keeping costs for parents to a minimum. The school is looking to continue its strong position of operating its own bus, which it has done for the last number of years, with several members of staff already qualified to drive the bus, making it a more economical option than hiring external coaches for all school activities.
School Principal Noel Daly said the bus plays a vital role in school life. “Our extra-curricular programme is a core part of the Portlaoise College experience. Having our own bus allows us to give students access to sport, music and cultural activities without placing additional financial pressure on families. Replacing the bus is an investment in our students and in the wider school community,” he said.

As part of the campaign, the school is seeking corporate sponsors, with opportunities available at gold, silver and platinum levels. Sponsors will have their logo displayed on the bus as well as on a dedicated sponsors’ wall within the school. Companies interested in supporting the project can contact the school at info@portlaoisecollege.ie

A major student and community event will take place on Friday, February 13, when students will participate in a 6,000km colour walk, seeking sponsorship to contribute to the fund. The day will also include a community gathering at the school to acknowledge sponsors and supporters.
In addition, a team-based challenge is running for staff and community groups throughout January, with participants taking on a bogathon, a Hyrox-style event or completing 100km walking over the month. Groups already involved include LOETB staff, Portlaoise Panthers, Portlaoise Family Resource Centre, Timahoe Male Choir, Clonad GAA, among others.
To sponsor a student, a community group or a teacher, go to the school's fundmajor site and select their group on the page. Students will be particularly keen on their correct class being selected, as there is a competition amongst class groups.
