Major works involving water mains in Durrow, County Laois will commence in the coming weeks.

Uisce Éireann have confirmed that crews will be on site on the Derry Road in Durrow from next week to begin replacing water mains.

The works will see over 1km of aging water mains replaced with new and modern pipes in the hopes of providing a more secure supply for the town.

The civil engineering specialist company Shareridge will be carrying out the replacement of the water mains as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works are expected to be completed by early spring.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said these works will provide customers in Durrow with "a more secure and reliable drinking water supply."

Mr Murphy said: "The replacement of these water mains will improve the resilience of the network, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean water lost into the ground."

He added that Uisce Éireann would like to thank the local community in Durrow for their support and patience in advance of the works beginning.

Laois TD Seán Fleming has welcomed the works, saying: "Finally, I look forward to these works being completed resulting in an improved water supply and the reduction in water leaks in Durrow."
