Motorists trapped in car following crash on icy Laois road

A motorist who was trapped in their car was one of two people taken to hospital following crashes involving black ice in Laois on Thursday morning.  

Gardaí this morning issued a warning on social media to drivers as black ice led to treacherous conditions and crashes across Laois and Offaly. 

They published an image of a car which had crashed at Geashil in Co Offaly and was lying on its side in a ditch. 

Laois Gardaí said a driver was trapped in their vehicle when it crashed into a ditch at Skerry, Rosenallis after skidding on black ice at around 5.45am on Thursday morning. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and the fire bridge was called to safely remove them. The motorist was taken to hospital as a precaution.

On Thursday afternoon a car skidded on black ice at The Swan before overturning at 1.10pm. Gardaí said the driver was taken to hospital as a precaution and due to shock. Laois County Council was notified of the incident. 

“There were a couple of accidents yesterday but they were all material damage,” Laois Gardaí told the Leinster Express/Laois Live this morning. 

At Coolagh in Portarlington a car skidded on black ice and collided with a ditch, Gardaí said. Another crash occurred Ullard, Portarlington at around 11.50am when a car skidded on black ice and crashed.

There was another crash at Slatt Lower involving two cars at around 5pm on Thursday. 

Meanwhile, there were two non weather related collisions reported in Laois yesterday. There was a two car crash on Main Street in Borris-in-Ossory and a minor two car collision at Portlaoise Hospital.
