Laois apprentice accused of laundering over €14,000

Court Service says Portlaoise courthouse kept clean with low numbers

An apprentice electrician appeared in court accused of money laundering. 

Jack Tobin (25) of 8 Buttercup Avenue, Esker Hills, Portlaoise, is accused of money laundering the sum of €14,118.32 on a date between June 28 and July 4, 2024. 

Garda Lisa Murray served him with a book of evidence at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said there was one charge in the book of evidence and the case should be sent forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court. 

Judge Susan Fay said the DPP had consented to the case being sent forward. She issued an alibi warning and made the order sending the case forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court sitting on February 17. 

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was an electrical apprentice. She requested legal aid and said the defendant had been saving money for court. Judge Fay granted legal aid for a solicitor and a barrister.
