An historic and unusual wooden public water pump in Laois is to get a restoration, with a request for a special plaque to honour a lady who kept it looking wonderful during her lifetime.

Laois Heritage Officer Thomas Carolan has confirmed to Cllr John Joe Fennelly, that the pump in Ballinakill is expected to be fullre restored by June 2026.

Cllr Fennelly had asked for an update, in a motion tabled to the February meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

He is delighted to hear that a full conservation approach has now been communicated to the local community and the district's area office.

"I am delighted we have a timeframe. It's a year since I last asked. The poor lady who looked after it has gone to her eternal rest. It was her pride and joy. She planted flowers, she painted it. Maybe we can install a plaque for the lady who looked after it for so many years," Cllr Fennelly suggested.

Cllr Barry Walsh seconded and agrees.

"This lady should be honoured. This is an important, historical part of Ballinakill," he said.

Mr Carolan says he will be liaising with stakeholders to support the restoration.
