The gathering of Laois' first ever Bat Conservation Group was a major success, with many people attending the inaugural meeting to show their support and interest.
Over 35 people attended the group's first meeting which was held in Portlaoise Library on Thursday, February 12. Anyone with an interest in bats, biodiversity, or nature was welcome along to the event.
Laois County Council Biodiversity Officer, Lisa Doyle and Anna Coombe from Bat Conservation Ireland hosted the meeting which focused on local bat conservation and biodiversity.
The meeting brought together members of the public, local volunteers, and biodiversity advocates to learn more about the county’s bat populations and the ongoing efforts to protect them.
A range of topics were covered in the meeting, including the species of bats commonly found in Laois, their ecological value, the threats facing bat habitats, and the practical steps communities and individuals can take to support bat surveys and events.
Attendees were particularly engaged during discussions on the identification of Irish bat species through preserved samples, the importance of dark corridors, and best practices for reporting sightings.
Laois County Council Biodiversity Officer, Lisa Doyle highlighted how bats contribute significantly to local ecosystems through natural insect control and the maintenance of biodiversity balance. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions, share observations, and exchange experiences.
Anna Coombe introduced the range of surveys, talks, and events available for volunteers to learn as members of the group.

Lisa Doyle described the event as a "resounding success," noting the high level of interest and constructive community spirit throughout the meeting.
Many attendees expressed enthusiasm for future workshops, guided bat walks, and citizen science projects planned for later in the year.
