Planning permission is being sought to retain a carpark that has already been built for staff at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has applied to Laois County Council for permission to keep a carpark it built across the Block Road from the hospital entrance in Portlaoise.

It built the carpark on a green field behind a site which had been granted permission for a temporary carpark, all on HSE owned land, within the grounds of St. Fintan’s Hospital & Healthcare Campus, which is listed as a Protected Structure.

Now it seeks permission to retain the new carpark, and also to make it permanent instead of a temporary five year carpark.

The site is next to the ambulance station. It has 107 carparking spaces, including five EV charging spaces and five wheelchair spaces. A native Irish hedgerow has been planted around the carpark.

A planning decision is due by May 5.
