Students at Portlaoise College have collectively walked more than 4,000 kilometres as part of a recent walkathon supporting the school’s “Step Up for the School Bus” fundraiser.
The Portlaoise student's initiative, which aims to raise €100,000 towards the purchase of a new school bus, has already gathered significant momentum, with approximately €70,000 raised to date. The walkathon saw students across all year groups take part, contributing their steps over a number of days in a coordinated effort to boost the fundraising campaign.
Principal Noel Daly praised the students’ efforts along with the wider community’s ongoing support. “The commitment shown by our students has been very encouraging,” he said. “This fundraiser is about more than just reaching a financial target — it reflects a strong sense of community within the school. We are very grateful to everyone who has supported us so far.”
The school bus project is intended to improve transport access for students and to support participation in extracurricular activities, including sports and educational trips.
Representing the fundraising committee, James Moloughney, highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum as the campaign enters its final phase. “Reaching €70,000 is a significant milestone, but we still have a bit to go,” he said. “Every contribution makes a difference, and the support from families, local businesses and the wider community has been vital.”
As part of the fundraising efforts, a Bonanza raffle is currently underway, with tickets available online. Organisers are encouraging continued participation as they work towards the overall target. Tickets can be purchased at: https://portlaoisecollege-busfundraiser.fundmajor.com/sponsoring/84
The school has extended its thanks to all those who have contributed thus far, whether through donations, sponsorship or participation in events such as the walkathon. Any businesses that would like to offer sponsorship and have their logo on the new bus can also contact the school on info@portlaoisecollege.ie
With the campaign continuing, staff and students remain hopeful that the target will be reached in the coming weeks.
