There is sadness across Laois this week following the passing of Stradbally woman Carmel Delaney, who passed away on Sunday March 29.
Carmel was known locally for her voluntary work, as a lifelong member and volunteer of the Stradbally Community Games. Carmel was awarded the Laois Volunteer of the Year award in 2018 at the Stradbally Community Games awards.
The committee paid tribute to Carmel on her sad passing.
"Her years of dedication ensured the children of the community got to excel at local, county and national level in their chosen activity," the group said.
"Our deepest condolences to Brendan, Aileen, Edna, Eamonn, Gabrielle and especially Claire another dedicated volunteer and the extended Delaney and Hickey families. Carmel now joins her husband Ted and Ciaran her grandson who passed a few short months ago. May she Rest In Peace," the committee said.
Carmel is sadly predeceased by her grandson Ciarán, who passed away in January of this year.
Laois locals have expressed their sympathy with the Delaney and Hickey families, remembering Carmel as a generous and kindhearted woman, a truly loyal neighbour and a friend for many years.
"Rest in eternal peace Carmel. You were a great neighbour to all in Kylebeg. Always ready to give advice and help in anyway you could. Deepest and sincere sympathy to your family. The Little Town will miss you," one person said.
"A lovely lady and good neighbour," another person paid tribute.
"Carmel was a lovely woman who always made me feel welcome in her home back in the day," another person said.
“Carmel you were one of the best and you will be greatly missed," another local said.
