A train travelling from Dublin to Cork was forced to stop in Portlaoise this afternoon after a vehicle struck a railway bridge.
Iarnród Éireann/ Irish Rail said the 12 noon train from Dublin to Cork was forced to stop in Portlaoise.
A social media post notified rail users that services had been suspended between Portlaoise/Ballybrophy due to a report of a vehicle striking a bridge in the area at around 12.20pm.
“Relevant staff have been advised and are en-route to inspect the bridge. The 12:00 Heuston/Cork is stopped at Portlaoise as a result,” they stated.
Railway staff have to inspect a bridge if it has been struck by a vehicle in order to ensure it is safe for trains to use.

Just before lunchtime Iarnród Éireann/ Irish Rail issued an update to say services had resumed between Portlaoise and Ballybrophy.
