Investigations are underway following the death of a prisoner at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise this evening.
It’s understood the man had been placed in a secure cell following an interaction with prison officers earlier today. He was later discovered unresponsive in the cell.
“The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death of a person in custody at Midlands Prison on 1st April 2026,” the Irish Prison Service said in a statement this evening.
“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office.
The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends,” the IPS concluded.
