Portlaoise District Court
A drunk Dublin man who was in Laois for a hurling match called Gardai ‘c**ts’ and nazis, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.
John Flynn (64) of 22 Ferrycarrig Avenue, Coolock, Dublin 17, was accused of being intoxicated and engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour at JFL Avenue on June 14, 2025.
“I apologise to the Judge,” the man said during the sitting of Portlaoise District Court. “I was in town for a Gaelic match,” he stated.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the incident occurred at 2.45pm when the man was discovered “highly intoxicated” on a Dublin coach.
“He repeatedly called Garda members c**ts,” said Sgt Kirby. He said the man also told them to f**k off and said “you are all nazis”. He said the man had 91 previous convictions.
Solicitor Brian Duffy said his client instructed him that he had travelled down to a hurling game on the date in question. He said the man had significant difficulties with alcohol and was in poor health. He said it was acknowledged that his behaviour was “indefenceable” and said “he got on the wrong bus and effectively lost the plot” on the day in question.
Mr Duffy said his client was attending meetings in order to address his addiction and he hadn’t been in trouble in four years.
“I have never met a man yet that too much whiskey agrees with,” Mr Duffy said.

Judge Andrew Cody said he would like to see some evidence that the man was addressing his difficulties.
He granted legal aid and adjourned the case to Portlaoise District Court on May 14 for proof that the man was making efforts.
“I’ll light a candle for you,” the man told Judge Cody as he was leaving the court.
