A customs officer was given more time to detain €24,895 in cash seized from a Laois shop during an investigation.
Customs Officer Michelle Smith made a detention order application against Thomas Brown before Portlaoise District Court in relation to the money which was seized from Browns Shop, Dublin Road, Portlaoise on May 7, 2025.
Ms Smith said the money was seized from the shop where a quantity of unstamped tobacco was discovered. She said the respondent had admitted in interview that the money derived from the unstamped tobacco.
Solicitor Philip Meagher asked “what stage is the investigation at?”
Ms Smith said “a file is with the DPP and we are waiting for directions”.

Judge Andrew Cody ordered the detention of the cash until July 8, 2026. He noted that it would be 14 months since the initial detention and he said that if directions weren't available at that stage he “may well release” the cash. "I would expect some progress,” he told Ms Smith.
