A Laois primary school participating in the 'Blue Star Programme' received a visit from a member of the European Parliament.

The 5th and 6th classes of Scoil Fionntáin Naofa, Shanahoe have been enthusiastic participants in the ‘Blue Star Programme’ for the past five years.

This initiative, managed by European Movement Ireland, encourages primary school pupils to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the European Union, from its history, institutions and culture to its impact on Irish life.

A highlight of the ‘Blue Star Programme’ is the opportunity for ‘VIP visits’ from political representatives.

On Friday March 27, students received a visit from Fianna Fáil MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, Fianna Fáil Deputy Sean Fleming and Fianna Fáil Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

"Through creative and interactive learner experiences, pupils explore four key European elements: historical development, geographical awareness, culture and creativity, and European institutions," principal Barry Whelan told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

The school is currently working towards achieving its fifth consecutive ‘Blue Star Flag’ in recognition of its sustained commitment and success in this educational programme, which opens up meaningful lines of integration across and between different subject areas of the ‘Primary Curriculum Framework’.

"All three levels of the political system- European, national and local were represented at the school that morning," Mr Whelan said.

Having travelled directly from Brussels, Ms Ní Mhurchú received a warm welcome at the school gates from Deputy Principal, Mr Johnny Watson’s infant classes, who cheerfully waved EU flags to greet their visitor.

School windows were also adorned with flags from the different EU member states.

Upon arrival, she was formally welcomed by principal Mr Barry Whelan, before being treated to a lively performance in the schoolyard by the school band, made up of pupils from 2nd to 6th Class under the baton of teacher Mrs Kris Cahill.

Following this, the pupils from 2nd to 6th Class and their teachers, Mrs Cahill and Mr Whelan, joined Ms Ní Mhurchú in Shanahoe Community Hall for an engaging and insightful question-and-answer session about her work as a Member of the European Parliament.

"The discussion covered a wide range of topics and gave pupils valuable insights into European democracy and policymaking," Mr Whelan explained.

"Ms Ní Mhurchú also spoke to the pupils about the importance of having strong personal values and working hard to achieve one’s goals and ambitions."

The MEP made direct reference to how her previous careers as a primary school teacher, journalist and television presenter, and more recently a barrister, have contributed to her current role as an MEP.

The session concluded on a cultural note, with pupils from Rang 2 to Rang 6 reciting poems and singing songs as Gaeilge, in honour of Ms. Ní Mhurchú’s proud identity as an avid Gaelgeoir.
