Páirc an Phobail has been granted the funding from the Minister of Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley
Over €20,000 has been granted to improve a popular Portlaoise park.
Laois County Council has been allocated €21,470 for improvement works at Páirc an Phobail in Portlaoise.
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, granted the funding to Páirc an Phobail to enhance accessibility, biodiversity, and a natural play area in the park.
The funding comes after a number of Portlaoise councillors raised concerns with some of the park's facilities which were described as "rotting" and "dangerous."
Cllr Tommy Mulligan told the March meeting of the Portlaoise MD that a lot of the equipment in the park needs to be replaced, including a wheelchair swing which is not working.
Welcoming the announcement, Laois TD Sean Fleming said: "I am pleased that Laois County Council applied for funding to improve biodiversity and accessibility for people who use this park.

"Páirc an Phobail is a 'gem' in Portlaoise and is also visited by many people from outside the town. I would encourage all people who have not yet taken time out to visit this park and enjoy the natural amenities that are in place to do so."
Deputy Fleming thanked Laois County Council for their ongoing work to improve the park which he said is "there for everybody to enjoy."
The Laois TD looked forward to the works being carried out by Laois County Council "as soon as practical."
