More public lighting must be provided on a busy stretch of road from a Laois supermarket to a local golf club, a councillor has argued.

Laois County Council was requested by Councillor John King to carry out a survey to see how many public lights are needed from Rathdowney Golf Club to the local Dunnes Stores.

Speaking at the recent Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick MD meeting, Cllr King said that lighting at the junction of the L1558 and the R435 in Rathdowney is "very poor" and more public lights are badly needed there.

The Fine Gael councillor urged that more public lighting be provided before next winter.

Laois County Council's Road Design team agreed to engage with the public lighting contractor to provide a quotation for the works in Rathdowney.

A meeting was arranged for this week to carry out an assessment of the road.

In March, the contract for public lighting was put up for tender by Laois County Council.

The estimated cost of the 12 month contract is over €1,250,000.
