Portlaoise to go festive with Christmas Market and Lights

Portlaoise Christmas Market

Christmas comes to Portlaoise this weekend with a festive street market as well as a big switch on of stunning Christmas lights.

The Portlaoise town lights are being switched on in Top Square on the evening of Friday November 25, with live music on the street, to get everyone in the spirit ahead of the Late Late Toy Show that night.

The switch-on will take place between 6.30 and 7.30pm.

The next morning, Portlaoise Christmas Market will be taking place, all throughout Saturday and Sunday, November 26 and 27.

The organisers promise that Main Street will be turned into a spectacular Christmas Market with a huge array of festive gifts for all.

"This year, the addition of a bandstand in the Top Square with local choirs and entertainment along with all of our usual attractions is going to ensure a magical weekend in Portlaoise."

Final preparations are under way for what is looking to be a fantastic festive weekend to kick off the Christmas season in Portlaoise, including the addition of a bandstand in Top Square and an 'Elf Academy' in the Dunamaise Theatre.

Downtown Portlaoise traders group has invested in some stunning new light features, including this huge deer on a James Fintan Lalor Avenue roundabout.

"Downtown Portlaoise in association with the Town Team, the Business Support Unit and Laois County Council are so excited this Christmas to bring lots of exciting new additions with more to come," they say.

One exciting family offering is the Elf Academy. From €5 per child or €30 a family, get some fun training on how to become a qualified Elf, in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

The training lasts some 40 minutes, with slots from 11am to 6.30pm. Supported by Laois Partnership, with tickets on sale from November 27 until December 22.
