Allegedly assaulted female prison officer in Portlaoise

Prisoner told Midlands prisons officer he'd burn down his house

An inmate who threw a bucket of dirty water over a female prison officer has been charged with assault. 

Sean McCarthy, 23, of 8 Abbeylea Drive, Swords, Dublin is accused of assaulting the woman at the Midlands Prison on September 17, 2020. 

Sgt JJ Kirby said it is alleged that on the date in question at 10 am in the Midlands Prison the accused, “threw a bucket of water over a female officer.” He said the water was smelly and dirty and there was a fear “disease may have been present in the water.”

Following the incident, the “injured party developed a skin rash to her face.” He said the woman is 50 years of age.

Judge  Michelle Finan accepted jurisdiction after listening to the allegations. She ordered disclosure granted in the case and adjourned the matter to Portlaoise District Court on January 19.
