Speed ramp
Speed leaves Laois County Council with no choice but to install ramps in a Durrow estate to protect children and other people living there, a county councillor has claimed.
Cllr Ollie Clooney, Independent, raised speed in Derrywood at a recent meeting with officials. He tabled a motion calling for traffic calming ramps in the estate.
He explained, with regret, that there are no other options.
“One would wish that you wouldn’t need ramps for this lovely estate but with the speed of cars there is no alternative,” he said.
Cllr Clooney said installation should be accelerated for safety reasons.
“There are a lot of children and we have to keep safety in mind. Nobody wants to see an accident but the speed is unacceptable. We have no option,” he said.
Cllr John King, Fine Gael, believes ramps work.
“They are the only means of controlling traffic,” he said.
Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, said the council engineers would arrange to meet the Elected Member in the estate to examine the safety concerns.
The issue was raised at the Borris-in-Osory Mountmelllick Municipal District meeting in November.
