BBC Broadcasting Journalist Henry Wymbs has released a book entitled ‘On the Shoulders of Giants, which features many of the interviews I have done over the years with legendary Gaelic footballers and hurlers who played and starred for their respective county teams from the 1940s to the 1970s.
The stories within this book prove a telescopic lens into a period of a time long since gone, but not completely forgotten, when electricity was not yet in the rural family home, the turf was the main source of fuel, and water was collected from the local well, a time before the advent of the internet and social media.
As part of the book, Henry interviewed one of the most influential families in Laois and Camross hurling, the Cuddy's. Both Jack Cuddy, who sadly passed away recently, and his brother Martin partook by giving interviews to Henry. In one excerpt Martin speaks of the pure elation he felt after captaining his club to the 1977 Leinster senior hurling club title.
“My proudest moment came in 1977, when I captained Camross to a Leinster senior hurling club title with a one-point victory over reigning All-Ireland champions, James Stephen’s of Kilkenny. We probably had no right to be in the same field as the Kilkenny champions, as they had a team laden with senior and minor All-Ireland medals. Three of their starting line-up were All-Stars award winners a year earlier: - Mick Crotty, Liam “Chunky” O’Brien and Brian Cody were known far and wide. Following a famous victory, the tears flowed from the eyes of young and old and the journey home to the village began with flags from all the houses along the route. Never to be forgotten.”
The book can be purchased on amazon and at Hero books in Dublin
