Laois town's cemetery entrance set for improvement

Laois town's cemetery entrance set for improvement

Work is set to start on laying a new road surface at the entrance to Rathdowney Cemetery.

The news was confirmed to the Independent by Cllr James Kelly, Independent  after he called on Laois County Council to carry out tarmac reinstatement works.

Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied that a contractor has recently been appointed with the works expected to start in January 2023.

Cllr Kelly said the concrete had deteriorated to a point where water had pooled at the entrance. He said he attended a recent funeral and noticed that those taking the coffin into the graveyard had to walk through water at the entrance.

Cllr John King, Fine Gael, supported the motion. He added that the road would be resurfaced into front of the cemetery alongside the entrance work.

The issue was raised at the December meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District in County Hall Portlaoise.
