Major housing development approved in Laois town

An Bord Pleanala has given the green light for a major housing development in a Laois town.

Kilkenny Investment Property Holding Ltd was granted permission to build 54 homes in Mountmellick last January.

Laois County Council approved the development at Ballycullenbeg, off Harbour Street in Mountmellick subject to 19 conditions. However, the decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanala, who have now ruled in favour of the development, subject to revised conditions.

The planned development includes 54 units comprising of 22 number three-bedroom two-storey end-terrace units, 14 number three- bedroom two-storey mid-terrace units, eight two-bedroom two-storey mid-terrace units, two number two-bedroom bungalow end-terrace units and two two-bedroom bungalow mid-terrace units. The plans also include six semi-detached three-bedroom two-storey houses.

The development includes the removal of the existing boundary screen wall and creation of a new entrance road and footpaths onto Grange Hall.

Installation of foul and surface water drains, associated site works and the provision of Electric Vehicle charging spaces for one tenth of the car parking was also included.

An Bord Pleanala ruled that subject to conditions it has outlined for the plan, the development will not be at risk of flooding or contribute to flood risk on adjacent lands.
