Repairs are needed so more headstones are not damaged at a cemetery in Mountrath, according to a county councillor.

Cllr James Kelly, Independent, raised the issue relating to St Fintan’s Cemetery,  Mountrath at a recent meeting with officials.

Cllr Kelly tabled a motion calling on the local authority to carry out works at the cemetery. He He wants a post and fence rail at to prevent further damage to family headstones and graves.

Cllr Kelly explained further that the issue was ‘emotive’ and was caused after cattle broke into the cemetery causing damage. He hoped that money could be found to prevent a repeat.

He added that the graveyard must also be secured as it is being used as a walk through route with dogs straying into the property also.

“It is not nice with what's happening to people’s graves,” he said.

Mr. Ken Morley, Community & Graveyards, replied for the council.

“I will arrange to meet with Cllr Kelly at Mountrath Cemetery to discuss the extent of the works requested,” he said.

The issue was raised at the recent meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
