McGuires of Rooskey
This Saturday, January 14, is a very special day for McGuires of Rooskey. They will be marking the first anniversary of the re-opening of the filling station and shop originally operated by their father Frank.
The last 12 months have been hugely successful for Frank's sons, Francis and John, who have seen the business successfully grow in these tough economic times while also making plans for the future with the planned opening of an off licence later this year, subject to planning permission.
McGuires has been a landmark in the area for decades but last year saw the unveiling of a magnificent state of the art premises, featuring fuel and forecourt, a convenience store, bakery and deli, complete with an attractive seating area overlooking the magnificent Shannon.

“Business if flying at the moment,” John McGuire said. “It is going better than we thought. The local people have been really supportive and were really happy when we re-opened. It has woken up the village up a bit, given it back a bit of life.”
McGuires of Rooskey was formerly run by their father Frank but unfortunately it closed over a decade ago.
Poignantly, the renowned business re-opened just over a year after the death of Frank, who first developed the family business after acquiring the property back in 1979.
His sons were delighted to take on his legacy 12 months ago as John recalled that it was always their father's wish to re-open the business but he never had the chance.
The two decided to give it a go but had plans for a much smaller operation.
However, as these plans developed they grew into what is currently in operation today.
The decision to re-open their father's business was not an easy one for John and Francis. Francis had been living in Norway prior to this and came home in 2021 to join his brother. He had been working as a plumber and John had been working as a panel beater. However the two ended up doing much of the construction work themselves and as they say... the rest is history.
Along with the successful filling station and shop the family pride itself on their deli and bakery.
John explains that they always try to offer something new in the deli and make sure to cook in smaller batches to ensure freshness throughout the day.
The array that the bakery offers is impressive with all goods, such as scones, apple tarts and pound cakes, all baked freshly on the premises.
They also offer a full car wash and valeting service.
Perhaps a sure affirmation of their tireless work was the awarding of the Forecourt Retailer of the Year (Small) Silver Winner by Shelf magazine.
The McGuires, on marking one year in business, would like to thank and pay tribute to their staff and all their loyal customers. They also thanked Jason McEvoy of Sweeney Oil, David Mayne from Gala and Brian Tuffy of Tuffy Cash and Carry for their assistance and continued support.
McGuires of Rooskey is open seven days a week, from 7am - 10pm, except on Sundays where they are open from 9am - 9pm. To mark their anniversary they are promoting a special raffle in-store.
Frank Snr would surely be very proud to see his legacy continue to grow from strength to strength.
