A protest is due to take place at 12.30pm today utside Leinster House calling for an investment plan for Irish forests to be abandoned.

The Rural Ireland Organisation (RIO) along with coalition partners have set up the “Save our Forests Save Our Land” Campaign, in an effort to stop the sale of such lands to hedge funds. 50 different groups and organisations are to have joined the campaign across the country.

The arrangement between Coillte and Gresham House, a UK investment firm, could see thousands of acres of new forestry planted, however farmers say it amounts to a 'land grab' and should be scrapped.

There are two motions against the deal tabled for Ballinamore Municipal District meeting next Monday, January 30.
