Leitrim County Councillors have backed an amendment in the 2023-2029 County Development Plan which 'discourages' the planting and replanting of forestry on boglands.
At today's special meeting on the new County Development Plan, Cllr Justin Warnock asked if there was an opportunity in the plan to state that the planting of forestry on peat lands should be 'discouraged'.
Cllr Enda Stenson agreed noting that "it is wrong" to allow this type of land to be planted.
Cllr Padraig Fallon further amended the proposal noting that the Development Plan should say that Leitrim County Council not only discourages but "is opposed" to the planting and replanting of peat lands.
Cllr Mary Bohan backed this noting that the landslide on Shass Mountain three years ago highlighted the issues with planting in such areas.
"When you see trees floating down a mountain," she observed, "that sort of planting should never have been allowed."
Senior Planner, Bernard Greene, clarified that the proposed amendment for inclusion in the new plan is as follows: "The Local Authority discourages and is opposed to the planting and replanting of commercial forestry on peat lands".
This amendment was proposed by Cllr Enda Stenson and seconded by Cllr Mary Bohan.
