Ben Lennon
A Tribute Concert in Memory of Ben Lennon will be a night to remember on Saturday, April 1 in The Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon.
The Dock is very pleased to have the opportunity to present this wonderful tribute to the legendary Leitrim musician, Ben Lennon, whom we lost in 2020. Hailing from Kiltyclogher in the north of the county, Ben Lennon was, according to Charlie Piggot, the “grand gentleman of Irish traditional music.”
Born into a musical family in 1928, he began to learn the fiddle at the age of 10, from dancing master Seán O’Donoghue.
Despite eventually becoming ensconced in the traditional music community, he left for London in the 1940s, where he was able to pursue his career as a tailor.
Here, he met and married his wife Patsy Eames, another Leitrim native and eventually the family returned to Ireland in 1955, living in both Cork and Limerick before moving back to Leitrim in the 1970s.
Ben’s recording career spanned over a 30 year period from his first commercial recording on the Claddagh label with Seamus Quinn, Ciaran Curran and Gabriel McArdle under the title ‘Dog Big Dog Little.’
He went on to record in 1999 ‘The Natural Bridge’ and in 2008 he recorded a CD with Limerick concertina player Tony O’Connell called ‘Rossinver Braes’ – all to critical acclaim.
Ben was the recipient of the Gradam Ceoil Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
In March 2020, Ben sadly passed away, leaving behind him a remarkable legacy of recordings.
Since then, because of the pandemic, it has been difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the man.
Now, finally , we have that chance.
On Saturday, April 1, a selection of our finest musicians will gather in Carrick-on-Shannon, to perform in a dedicated concert to pay a well deserved tribute.
Hosted by Cathy Jordan of Dervish we will gather to celebrate the life and music of the legend that we lost, three years ago, but whose influence we will always remember hold dear.
There are still a small number of tickets available from The Dock box office on (071) 96 50 828 , or through the website at www.thedock.ie
Admission is €18, with a concession rate of €16.
* Please note that due to the high demand for tickets, this event will take place in the bigger venue of The Bush Hotel.
