The Neurology Support Centre Surf & Swing is a fundraising event bringing together the sports of surfing and golfing. It takes place in Strandhill, Sligo on Saturday, April 29.
Teams of four will compete against each other, with two team members surfing in the morning, and the other two golfing in the afternoon. They are delighted that both Leitrim GAA and Sligo GAA will be entering a team in the event.
Following Sunday’s exciting league match in Carrick-on-Shannon, board member, Eamon McPartlin, a proud Leitrim man is hoping that Leitrim and Sligo will meet again in the Connacht Championship and Leitrim will win to level up the series, with the deciding meeting between the teams being at the Surf and Swing event a week later!
The surfing part of the event will be judged by the Irish Surfing Association (ISA) who will be bringing their own judging van complete with the latest hi-tech in electronic marking system, led by Strandhill local Roy Kilfeather, secretary of the ISA.
The three surf schools in Strandhill – Rebelle Surf, Sligo Surf Experience and the Strandhill Surf School – will be running the event in the water and we are very grateful to Melanie, Dave and Seamus for their support.
The golfing will take place at the beautiful Strandhill links course, under the expert eye of pro-player Xavier Medas.
The day will culminate in the awards ceremony in the Strandhill clubhouse where the teams will be rewarded for their efforts on the day.
The emphasis of the event is on fun event is designed so that participants do not need to be experts in either golfing or surfing – all levels of expertise from beginner to expert can participate.
This unique event is about having fun in the beautiful Sligo outdoors, while raising awareness and much needed funds for the work of the Neurology Support Centre.
The Neurology Support Centre is a Sligo-based charity that serves those in the Northwest affected by a neurological condition, with many of our members coming from Leitrim.
Its premises in Molloway House on the Mall offers the opportunity for those with a neurological condition to meet and share their experiences in our weekly peer support group sessions. Other services include counselling, art therapy, reflexology, transport and more.
The NSC also promotes research into neurology and is currently partnering with ATU Sligo on a postgraduate research bursary directly aimed at improving the quality of life for people with a neurological condition.
In addition, the centre also supports the Neurology Department in Sligo University Hospital and has funded the salaries of specialist neurology staff which have a direct impact on treatment and waiting lists for neurology patients in the Northwest.
Funds raised in support of this event will help us continue to provide our life-enhancing services.
All teams will have their own dedicated iDonate page and will compete not only in the waves or on the green, but also to raise the most funds for this excellent cause.
Joining the Leitrim and Sligo GAA teams will be Connacht Rugby, iRadio, local businesses and community groups.
