Concern about parking during Mohill realm works

Mohill Public Realm works to start after Summer

At this month's Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal meeting, Cllr Thomas Mulligan highlighted concerns over parking during the upcoming public realm works in Mohill.
Addressing the meeting, Cllr Mulligan said that he believed some extra measures are required to alleviate parking issues when works begin.
He said that if these works are not going to be carried out in the near future then certain issues need to be addressed such as the relining of the junction at Hyde Street and visibility issues for traffic entering this junction on the Main Street from the Dromod direction.
“I had hoped that one of the positives (of the upcoming public realm works) would be design elements which would slow traffic approaching this junction,” he said, adding he had previously understood that the central junction in the town would be raised.
However he said that there will now be no different levels on this junction. He stressed that there is a need to address safety concerns at this junction as part of the new design.
Cllr Enda Stenson acknowledged the difficulties at this junction noting that there was a crash at this location only a few weeks ago.
“I know there isn't room for a roundabout here but something must be done,” he said.
“I am not sure what the answer is but something must be done sooner rather than later.”
Cathaoirleach of Carrick-on-Shannon MD, Cllr Sean McGowan agreed noting that the exit from the road to Ballinamore and the road to Dromod and their intersection with Main Street is “extremely busy”.
He said an additional area of concern was the one way street system coming from Hunt National School out to the junction next to the American Bar.
“Could I ask that this junction be relined as the markings are gone,” he said.
Cllr Des Guckian said that part of the issues with junctions in Mohill related to the parking of vehicles too close to intersections leaving “sight lines very much reduced.”
Responding, district engineer, Darragh O'Boyle said that the Mohill public realm work will be carried out in stages and parking will be dealt with as part of this.
He said that the stages will help to minimise the impact of the works on the town and noted that, as part of the works requirements the contractor will be providing “a full time liaison Officer who will communicate on a daily basis with stakeholders in the vicinity of on going works giving information on progress, programme, access, services, etc".
Mr O'Boyle acknowledged that there is no “confirmed start date” for the works but said that he would talk to the Council's capital office on this and would get back to councillors on this.
