Mummers in Leitrim

It was announced this week by Leitrim Heritage Office that The Mummers Join Project has been approved for funding for 2023 by The Heritage Council and Leitrim County Council. The project is curated by local artists Edwina Guckian, Fionnuala Maxwell and Brian Mostyn.

The funding enables the community to:

• Straw hat making workshops throughout Leitrim in Autumn and in all Leitrim secondary schools
• Formation of Mumming groups
• A new programme for primary schools on How to Be A Mummer by Fionnuala Maxwell, Brian Mostyn and Edwina Guckian including new compositions of the mummers play, songs, dances, costume design, etc
• Heritage Week Straw celebrations
• Documentation and recording of The Mummers' Play that we wrote last year
• The Mummers Parade
• The Mummers Join party.

To kick start this year's project come sow oat seed together on Mount Allen Eco farm on the shores of Lough Allen, Co Leitrim Sunday, April 16 at 4pm.

There’ll be music and dancing and a guided walk by farm owner Tommy Earley. Organic oat seed will be provided. Return in Autumn to harvest the crop and learn to make your own Mummer costume. All ages, all nationalities, all communities farming together!

All events as part of The Mummers’ Join are free and supported by The Heritage Council Leitrim County Council.
