Carrick-on-Shannon - our town, your plan - have your say!

The masterplan framework will include ideas to better link the town centre with the river frontage together with ways of improving Carrick-on-Shannon’s arrival experience

For the last few months, Leitrim County Council in conjunction with the Carrick-on-Shannon Town Team supported by its consultant team, have been working on a masterplan framework for Carrick-on- Shannon town centre.

Following initial engagement, there will shortly be another opportunity to meet those involved and review and provide feedback on some emerging priorities and ideas.

Carrick-on-Shannon has been chosen as a key town under the first phase of the National Town Centre First initiative. This means a 'Town Centre First' vision and plan will be developed for the town, which will identify key projects and actions to be delivered to enhance Carrick-on-Shannon Town Centre.

Leitrim County Council, in conjunction with the Carrick-on-Shannon Town Team and an Integrated Design Team led by architects and urban planners Allies and Morrison Ltd, are now advancing ideas on a new masterplan for Carrick-on-Shannon town centre.

The objective is to create a town centre that functions as a viable, vibrant and an attractive location for people to live, work and visit, whilst also functioning as the service, social, cultural, and recreational hub for the local community.

An initial ‘pop up’ consultation event took place in Market Yard alongside the Farmers’ Market on Thursday, February 2. This was supported by an on-line questionnaire. The feedback received has help the design team formulate priorities and project ideas for the Carrick-on-Shannon masterplan.

The Council would now like to test these initial emerging ideas with local people at another market stall event on Thursday, 20 April 2023, between 10am and 2pm. An online survey will also be available to gather feedback.

Please come down to the Farmers’ Market on Thursday, 20 April to meet the team, review emerging ideas and get involved in this important conversation that will help shape the future of the town.

Key priorities for the masterplan framework will include ideas to better link the town centre with the river frontage together with ways of improving Carrick-on-Shannon’s arrival experience.

The resulting Carrick-on-Shannon Town Centre First Masterplan will support the ongoing work of the local authority. It will provide an overall strategy for the town centre, identifying opportunities for improvements by proposing strategies and projects in the short, medium and long term. Leitrim County Council will use the masterplan to implement improvements and projects, seek funding, and inform conversations with other government bodies in order to deliver positive change.
