Aldi lodge plans to expand Carrick-on-Shannon store

Aldi Ireland Stores have applied for planning permission to Leitrim County Council to expand it's Carrick-on-Shannon facility.

The retail company wish to construct a single storey Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) Kiosk and they also want to erect two signage panels for branding on the Castlecara/ Dublin Road, Carrick-on-Shannon.

A Deposit Return Scheme encourages people to recycle by giving customers money back when they return containers to the retailer. Ireland will be introducing a Deposit Return Scheme in February 2024. This means from that date when you buy a drink in a plastic bottle, aluminium or steel can that features the Re-turn logo, you pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink. When you return your empty, undamaged container to any retail outlet, you get your deposit back in full.

It is expected that a  deposit of 15c will apply to containers from 150ml to 500ml inclusive and a deposit of 25c for containers over 500mls to 3 litres inclusive.

Aldi is the first store in Leitrim to apply for the kiosk.

Submissions can be made on the plan until May, with the local authority expected to make a decision on the planning application in June.
